blah (1)

This post is part of a weekly feature called the Passion Series…enjoy!

Tonight I’m featuring a blogger I actually know. Well, not really know like in real lifebut a blogger whose blog I subscribed to long before I even started this series.

His name is Joe.

A few months ago (maybe a year?) I submitted my blog to PersonalBlogs.org. Through there, I stumbled upon Joe’s blog and found that he was also a writer, using blogging as an outlet for honing his craft, and for life in general. So I decided to subscribe and I’m glad I did. Blogging for him is exactly what it is for me–a way of getting thoughts out into the open in a somewhat organized fashion to help make life less complicated (and of course more interesting). While it’s not his first stab at blogging (join the club!), his current blog, The Only One Lonely, has motivated him to seek more writing opportunities and to constantly improve his craft.

He also does a terrific job of getting songs stuck in my head. He does this cool thing where each of his blog posts are titles of songs, including the title of his blog, which happens to be a song by Val Emmich. As a firm believer that songs save lives, I’m all for this writing + song combo. I also think his knack for writing longer posts helps us remember the beauty of long-form pieces of work, and that when you sit down to read one of his posts, you know it’s going to be well thought out, insightful, and also pretty funny.

Here’s what he had to say.

Has blogging helped you in any emotional or creative way?

I actually think the number one reason why I enjoy blogging is, in fact, because it helps me emotionally and creatively.

On an emotional level, writing about life and what’s on my mind really helps me sort out what’s going on in my brain and in my heart. Putting everything into words helps me make sense of it, and from there, I guess you can say then I can approach whatever is going on with me a little more objectively.

On a creative level, I think part of the key to becoming a great writer is making sure that you’re exercising your actual ability to, you know…WRITE. And blogging is the perfect time and place to do exactly that without being too critical or demanding. For me, personally, it’s also helpful and kind of constructive for me to go back and see what annoying spelling, grammar, and overused vocabulary words I need to try and correct in my writing going forward.

Has blogging daily/weekly helped you achieve any personal goals?

Absolutely. I think that at my core, I’m not someone who takes immediate action to change things or adjust the course that I’m on. Dwelling on things and eventually blogging about them kind of helps me iron out specifically what it is that I need to do or change about my habits. I seem to be able to convince myself to do things that I wouldn’t ordinarily do through blogging, too. This didn’t happen on my current site, but I one time even convinced myself to go rock climbing with some friends despite having a good amount of fear of breaking my neck or something equally disastrous. Blogging can be a pretty powerful motivator for me after a while!

Does the ritual of daily/weekly blogging give you motivation to pursue things you are passionate about?

In a weird way, I think that I kind of answered this with the previous question, but it absolutely works the same when it comes to things that I’m passionate about. Though I’m no professional or academic, I feel like I’ve developed some pretty good writing skills for someone without a college education. Thanks to blogging and writing online, I’ve become more and more interested and passionate in trying to find more opportunities to get my writing out there and to keep improving upon it.
